A decade ago, Nikole Hannah-Jones put her daughter in a high-poverty, majority-Black New York City public school to “live her values” and challenge a segregated system. She assumed her status, time, and checkbook would lift the school. They didn’t. The cafeteria was chaos. Work went ungraded. Foundational skills never stuck. At 16, her daughter asked the question the ideology couldn’t answer: you had the money for a great school—and you chose not to?
